Voodoo Queen

Stephen Howarth, April 18, 2024April 19, 2024

Marie Laveau was indeed the Voodoo Queen and we visited her grave in St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 whilst we were in New Orleans, which by the way is an amazing, bustling, musical city – fantastic place, we loved it.

2,000 miles into the journey via train/bus/street-car/boat and taxi, passing through half a dozen states or so and we are still only 2 weeks into our adventure. There is no point in just listing states and cities as they are in the first USA post but some of the highlights we really enjoyed while getting down here to Houston were sightseeing in Washington D.C. where we saw The President’s helicopter running in and out of the White House a few times. A visit to Arlington National Cemetery and a trip to the Natural History museum.

New Orleans was a great place to experience, particularly as we accidentally booked the weekend of the French Quarter Festival which brought in thousands of party people from all over the world. A wonderfully quaint Louisiana style B&B and a trip along the Mississippi river on a paddle steamer were amongst some of the treats the city had to offer, not forgetting the excellent local food.

A few more city stops later including Atlanta and we find ourselves in Houston. We had a great few days exploring the city on a guided tour plus a day out at Houston Space Centre (correct spelling). There was a robotics championship happening with high schools from all around the world competing which was quite hectic but interesting, and again some wonderful food on offer.

Apart from a near miss with a Tornado and some flooding in nearby towns the weather has been very hot and sunny. It took only a couple of hours in Louisiana to get sun burnt, it was so hot. Got the sun screen and moisturiser ready for the next couple of months.

Time to pack up again now and move on out to Dallas in the morning…

Washington was great seeing all the landmarks that I’d only seen on TV and doing our own bespoke tour meant we got to see everything on our list plus a few more. I think the Korean War Veterans Memorial was at the top of the list, very respectfully designed and quite moving.

New Orleans was cool, well very hot actually but a lot of fun. We picked a great area to stay in and a great time to visit. The Festival was crazy, thousands of people having fun in the sun, lots of infectious music with great food. 😎

Every city has been different so far and Houston has not let us down with the Space Centre, the murals, street art and of course the tunnel system. πŸ‘

Definitely having a blast so far on our adventure. 😁

Glad you enjoyed Benidorm in the sun. We’ve been out in a huge electrical storm on a very interesting and informative JFK Assassination tour – still not 100% sure who dunnit LOL
