The Long Walk

The last few weeks have been a lot of fun, after we had recovered from Maverick that is, he was so cute and adorable but so much work. We had forgotten how much time a 10 week old puppy takes up, it has been 15 years since we had our own tiny puppy and with training being so critical at that young age it was a huge responsibility. Thankfully he was a quick learner and his parents are continuing his training and taking him to puppy classes – we look forward to calling back to see him at a later date to see his progress.

Staying down south we moved across south-east London to Meopham, we were keeping just outside the M25 as we were meeting Mike in Slough and had another sit in Redhill so the entirety of August was in this area. We knew the weather was going to change in the north-west so thought we would soak up some late summer sunshine whilst we had the chance. What we didn’t expect was to spend over a week in Meopham in 30+ °C temperatures! Wow that was hot but we did have a huge amount of fun looking after a 10 month old miniature dachshund.

Mike met us in Slough for a few days on his travels back home and as none of us had ever visited Windsor Castle we thought we would take the time to enjoy long walks to Windsor, down the banks of the Thames and take a day out to explore the castle. We had a relaxing time catching up with life events, trying some new foods in Slough and some naughty cakes in Windsor. Unfortunately we didn’t get time to complete the entire ‘Long Walk’ at the castle with Mike but luckily we returned a couple of weeks later to do it all again after our Redhill sit.

A new breed of dog we had never sat for before awaited us in Redhill, two very relaxed and friendly soft-coated Wheaten Terriers. Getting on in years they preferred sleeping to walking but this was just what we needed after such a busy start to the month. They were both very gentle and affectionate and we did manage lots of ‘slow’ walks and sofa cuddles.

September sees us venturing eastward to Bury St. Edmunds to sit for a very handsome yellow Labrador and as an added bonus our journey takes us past one of our previous black Labrador sits and we are excited to have been invited to call in and have a catch-up with them. There is also a distinct possibility that we may have managed to lose all the additional weight gained in the USA, that’s not to say we are at our ideal weights yet but we have managed to continue our exercises and cut back on the food.

The month ahead should be a nice relaxing one which includes a visit to Gaddesby, a special place for us and one which we very much enjoy, followed by a journey back home to see more family and friends before shooting off down south again to Somerset.

Hi Mate, sorry to hear the weather has been that bad, we have been very lucky in missing all the rain and wind. Just goes to show how the weather can be so different from north to south in the UK.

  2. Maverick was such a sweetie, very cute and exhausting but oh when you called him from across the garden and he did the “puppy bound” – it brought back so many wonderful memories of our own little puppy girl 🩷 Definitely look forward to seeing his progress in the future.

All the dogs this month have been great but the Wheaten Terriers were definitely on another level when it came to chilling out, they were also very relaxed on their walks, albeit a little slow, but then they are getting on in age and the weather was a bit warm too. In fact I reckon we’ve only seen around 3 or 4 days of rain this month – bit of a contrast to what we’re used to back home.

I’ve always fancied going to Windsor Castle so it was great to combine meeting Mike with a visit to the Castle, really glad we went with Mike’s suggestion of doing the Conquer the Tower Tour too, it was well worth the hike up the 200 steps for the view. It was a good long weekend nice to catch up, have some lovely walks to Eton and Windsor, enjoy nice food plus a couple of mini pub crawls around Slough made it even more interesting 😄

September starts off exciting with a lovely yellow Labrador, then we have a trip to our little cuties Ted and Wolfie in the middle and at the end of the month a trip back to see family, maybe we can take some of this southern sunshine back up north for them – fingers crossed 😉

  3. I’m thinking by the ‘naughty cakes’ comment you may have gotten round to some cheeky jam tarts whilst in Windsor? It’s always my highlight when I take a coach there!!
