Chocolate & Beer

We start May in Bruges, Belgium – no not dog sitting just a couple of weeks break visiting new places. However before we get to that we would like to thank John & Ruth for their hospitality and generosity in letting us stay with them at the end of April.

Having finished a short dog sit in Cheltenham for Molly the Labrador, we headed east to store the van at our usual place in Crawley before popping up to London where we had a great day out at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich and a lazy wander around the capital.

Unfortunately our Birmingham dog sit didn’t go to plan as the entire family we were sitting for came down with the Norovirus and had to cancel their holiday. We will have to wait until our Christmas sit to see Fred, Elsie & Alfie again. We also failed to organise a meet up with Carlos while we were in Birmingham but we will definitely address this at our earliest convenience.

The next couple of weeks we are travelling through Belgium, with visits to Bruges, Ghent, Brussels & Antwerp. It is somewhere we have never been before so we will explore the medieval cities, sample the famous chocolate and take in a few river cruises all at a leisurely pace – we are on holiday after all.

On this trip we decided not to fly but to take the Eurostar, we have done countless train journeys over the years since we set off but this is the first time on the Eurostar. We’ve heard good reviews from friends who use it regularly but anything could happen – Mike remembers all too well the day we arrived in Switzerland and broke their legendary reliable train network. Coincidentally Mike is visiting the UK at the end of the month so we’ve arranged a long weekend in Portsmouth so we can catch up.

We’ll bring you our highlights of Belgium in the next post along with details of our Island dog sit.

Molly was such a sweetie and we had some wonderful walks with her in the beautiful weather and countryside.

It was lovely to catch up with Auntie Ruth and Uncle John and to see Uncle Paul again, thanks for looking after us and making us feel very welcome 👍😘

Looking forward to trying out the Eurostar and seeing what Belgium has to offer – other than beer and chocolate 😂

Enjoy a well earned holiday. Hope you have a lovely time.

    See you both in June.

    Hugs and xx

It was great to spend time with you all – a lovely relaxing start to our holiday. Thank you again 😘

  4. Be careful with the Belgian beer. A bit stronger than in the UK. There is one called Bush Beer (12%). Also, one called Kwak (8.4%), served in a wooden glass holder. I discovered this at the Grande Place in Brussels. Plus some fruit flavoured dessert beers (for Nettie) – stronger than you think. Have fun over there. In Brussels, see if you can find the female version of Manneken Pis (Jeanneke Pis). Or, a better selfie for you two, the dog (Zinneke Pis).

Yeah we have Bush Beer in the bar next door to the hotel (hic) and we’ll certainly try and track down the landmarks in Brussels next week. See you in about 4 weeks in Portsmouth.

  5. We’ve been to Ghent and Bruges, both lovely places. Gerard’s grandfather was from Ghent so look out for some other Van Hecke’s.
Lovely to hear your news updates.
