Well it is one year since we retired and started to travel, so would we do it again – Absolutely! Obviously we lost Treacle in 2023 but we have to move forward with fond memories of her rather than heavy hearts over her departure, she lived a wonderful life and we thank her for all the joy and fun she brought us.
2023 has been without question the most enjoyable, eye-opening and rewarding year we have spent together. We have enjoyed more time with each other, met so many amazing people and seen some interesting and beautiful places but undoubtedly by far the most memorable and rewarding has been the countless doggie cuddles we have received from all our dog sit adventures.
This months post comes from the sunny Canary Isles as we relax and recharge after an incredible year and prepare for our epic American Adventure that is just around the corner. 2024 is already filled with exciting adventures and dog sit bookings and we look forward to seeing some of our new doggie friends and their owners again soon.
Now that we’re one year on I thought I would look back on some of the decisions and plans we made prior to setting off and evaluate if we got them right or wrong.
Let’s start with the campervan that has travelled the UK with us all year. We originally installed a sink and running water as we thought we would need a minimum of fresh drinking water wherever we found ourselves. The reality is that everywhere we have stayed in the van has provided fresh drinking water, this coupled with our ‘water2go’ filtered water bottles means we removed the sink in exchange for additional storage space half way through the year.
As previously mentioned we now have an electrical hookup point installed (thanks Brian for the assistance) so we have extended our range of cooking appliances (thanks Lin for the gift) and are now much more able to whip up snacks and meals when required – we still need to keep an eye on our waistlines though.
Clothing is another area we spent a lot of time researching and our extensive range of Merino wool garments and our insulated jackets are proving to be very good investments. We have added wellington boots to the list as we do a lot of dog walking as you can imagine and the UK weather has seen its fair share of downpours this last year.
The technology we brought with us has worked well so far and our online security is helping to protect our finances, however we are mindful that trouble can be around any corner and so a large dollop of finger crossing is also called for. If/when something goes wrong we’ll just have to work through it, no-one is 100% safe from scammers and thieves.
Finally we would like to say thank you to everyone who has followed our travels this last year, thank you to those who have posted replies and those who simply like to know what we are up to. 2024 sees us travelling further abroad and exploring new worlds and civilisations, to boldly go…
To be continued.
Annette
Wow, one year on and what a year, obviously apart from the departure of our little girl, but as you say we have many many fond memories of her – she was a star right to the very end. 🩷
2023 has been amazing, interesting and definitely lots of fun. Just thinking about all the things we did in December, first Cornwall and then navigating across the south coast to Newquay, Poole, Portsmouth and Eastbourne, with visits to amazing places like Durdle Door, Beachy Head and later in the month staying at The Olde Bell in Marlow with its very interesting history.
Our London trip was fun too with a very enjoyable visit to the Tower of London and then creating our own walking tour of the city taking in lots of the sites and sounds of London two weeks before Christmas, it was definitely a different atmosphere than we’ve experienced in the past, plus the weather was kind to us again so all in all a great trip. It was wonderful to see Auntie Ruth, Uncle John and Uncle Paul (thanks Ruth and John for your lovely hospitality) and to be able to spend some quality time catching up and having a good laugh, we’ll definitely be back.
So here we are in 2024, so many exciting things in store and it has started off very well indeed – my first flight in over 17 years and we are welcomed in Tenerife to blue skies and 22 degrees – not a bad way to start the year! 😀

Hi Annette,
It’s so interesting to read your email and sorry to hear about Treacle.
Wish I can have a life like yours, enjoy every moment and please take me with you 🤣
Take care ❤️
Minh
Annette
Thanks Minh, glad you are enjoying the emails.
Bless you, you’d probably fit in a suitcase too 😁 unfortunately we’ve only got small rucksacks 😉😂
All the best.
Take care ❤️ xx
Carlos
Very jealous you guys are in Tenerife. Let me tell you, it’s pretty cold here and only set to get colder!
Where did you store the van in the end?
Stephen Howarth
Hi mate, we’re really looking forward to what 2024 holds, we have some great adventures already planned.
We set off to the Canary Islands from Gatwick so we dropped the van off at CCM Gatwick for the month, very reasonably priced but we’ll reserve judgement on how good they were until we get back 🙂
Dave
Congrats on one year. Keep it up, want to see the 2nd and 3rd year blogs as well … 👍👍
At least you are warm over in Tenerife. As Carlos says, cold and set to get colder here. Why do I have an outside job … LOL
Keep the blogs coming and you both enjoy yourselves in 2024.

We achieved so much in 2023 and this year looks even more epic, we’ll keep travelling and blogging as long as we can.
We’re back in February so hopefully the UK weather will have settled and warmed up a bit, we’re in Cambridge for 6 weeks dog sitting but we’ll get back to see you at the end of March (when you’re 60 LOL).
Steven and Tracey
Love reading about your adventures. Congrats on your 1 year in milestone. Look forward to reading all about your travels in 2024.
Stephen Howarth
Hi guys, how are things going over there? We haven’t forgotten about you on our travels and we will get to NZ at some point but we’ll have to combine it with our AU trip when we visit Annette’s sister and brother-in-law.
Don’t forget that if you need an extended trip abroad we are now very experienced and almost full time dog/house sitters if Luna needs extra cuddles! 🙂
Melanie and Dave Hevicon
