Whilst out walking Bruno in Grittleton at the beginning of October we heard loud engine noises emanating from a few miles away, intrigued we decided to abandon our walk to the local pub and follow our ears. Several sign posts along the way made it obvious that we were dog sitting less than 3 miles from the famous Castle Combe motor racing circuit. Unfortunately as dogs are strictly prohibited here we decided to walk a little further to the stunningly beautiful village of the same name.
Castle Combe village has to be one of the prettiest and most peaceful places we have visited this year. No new buildings have been erected here for over 400 years offering an ideal opportunity to get a feeling of what village life was like during the Middle Ages, it has also featured regularly as a film location, most recently in The Wolfman, Stardust and Stephen Spielberg’s War Horse. It was also used in the original Dr Dolittle film.
The remainder of October has been spent in Somerset which is currently our favourite county for delicious food, particularly the sausages and pasties. We decided to take a trip to look around Bath as we were passing through on our way to the next dog sit, so we treated ourselves to a night staying at The Boathouse Country Pub which is situated on the banks of the river Avon.
We continued our dog sitting with a week in Castle Cary looking after Izzy & Feather the whippets, this is not far from Glastonbury hence the post image as you can see Glastonbury Tor from the back garden. If you have never been to Glastonbury, it’s an ‘interesting’ place where you can actually ‘Buy Crystals by Crystals’ – hilarious shop sign.
The next sit is in Sparkford, a stones throw from Castle Cary, sitting for Sparks & Bonnie, a couple of cute Retrievers, in fact we are still here for another week. There isn’t a lot going on around Sparkford so it’s very relaxing, however if you like cars the Haynes International Motor Museum is literally around the corner. We also get quite a few military helicopters flying over as we are relatively close to RNAS Yeovilton.
We are off on a holiday to Portugal later this month so we will have lots of new places to explore. We will share with you next time…

We are spending Nettie’s birthday dog sitting here in Somerset and then off to Lisbon. We have also just booked a couple of weeks in Belgium for next year – hopefully we can meet up with Ken A. from T2 whilst we are out there.

And you can swing by Paris which isn’t so far away 😉

Sure, Paris is only 1 hr 30 min on the train from Brussels, we could do a flying visit on one of our free days. I guess you’ll be working as hard as ever but if not give us a shout or tell us where to visit in Paris for a day.
