I thought I would put another post out today even though it has only been a week since the last one as we are now at the end of what we are going to call Phase 1 of our adventure. This is because we have now reached Los Angeles where we swap public transport for a hire car. It has been really interesting seeing how the landscape changed as we travelled across the majority of the southern border of the USA, so far south at one point that we could have thrown a stone at the Mexico border fence.
So far then on our east-bound leg of the trip we have narrowly missed a tornado in Louisiana, been far too close to a couple of mass shootings in New Orleans, avoided a street brawl in San Antonio and witnessed a suicide jump from the roof of an eight story car park in Las Vegas. We finished Phase 1 with a Metro ride through what can only be described as some rather shady neighbourhoods in Los Angeles, luckily getting off at the stop before Compton, LA.
Now having said all that we have really enjoyed speaking to countless interesting people and have seen some amazing places. We have learnt a great deal about American history and their current culture, we have seen the best and worst of people and continue to be surprised and amazed each day.
Phase 2 starts in the morning and assuming we can avoid speeding tickets, car jacking, auto accidents and break-downs it will give us the opportunity to explore further afield and not be tied to a schedule as such.
So much more to see and experience over the coming weeks, it has been a wild ride so far and we look forward to more of the same – except the dangerous and scary bits!

Phase 1 has definitely been crazy and unreal at times, public transport has had its ups and downs but with some stunning scenery along the way.
Phase 2 feels a bit like the start of a whole new vacation – should be very exciting 😁
Dave
Sounds like you are having an awesome time.
Look forward to reading about Phase 2.
Now “Is this the way to Amarillo”?
Stephen Howarth
Amarillo is a way off yet, but we did go to the Google Visitor Experience in Silicon Valley today – we decided not to bother with Apple.

That’s the only thing that concerns me with America, the shootings they have there.
I still want to get over there though, one day!
Stephen Howarth
The ‘Only’ thing that concerns you? It happens but it’s usually at least a couple of blocks away LOL just keep your head down.
We made it out of L.A. safely and are heading for Reno in the morning after breakfast – here in California it is clear cloudless skies and very hot.

Becareful out there that country is a mess. Not to say America is a fabulous place but to be mindful of hazards area,s an don’t get yourselves caught up with the mess out there politics

We are being careful and trying to stay away from trouble.
